TRENDS IN TERRORISM

Deterring the evil

Geetha L Joel

New Zealand reopens mosques targeted in terror attack The recent terror attack in Christchurch mosque is yet another attack that grabbed news headlines with various leaders condemning it. But for the video that circulated, it wouldn’t have tugged at the heartstrings of many as people are kind of conditioned to news of similar attacks.
Next the most disgusting ‘Smirk’of the terrorist. In my words, terrorists are not just shameless, remorseless beings but are cowards who target helpless innocent people instead of any honourable form of combat. If at all terrorism was a motivation or a cause of trying to right social, political or historical wrong, it’s not justifiable to kill general public and prove their might. And if terrorism is said to have had its roots in religion, then killing a handful is never going to erase one particular religion from the face of this earth.

If terrorism is said to have stemmed from poverty, lack of education or lack of political freedom, then again, killing people who are in no way connected to the problem will bring no solutions. So, terrorism is nothing but meaningless outrage of psychopaths across the world. Psychopaths who have no courage to get close to the real person or reason behind their frustrations should be subjected to slow poisoning that would tear them apart, slowly & steadily.

Distorted minds are found all over. In 2014, a French citizen was convicted over a terror attack in a museum in Brussels as if this amoral guy was annoyed by the collections or people’s admiration for them.

Arrests of terrorists are an opportunity for law enforcement agencies to do the best to deter these brutal clans. But in India, sometimes we take 4 years to hang a terrorist caught red handed because we are a nation with too many human rights’ activists who can’t stand a terrorist being killed, forget rapists.

Oscar López Rivera Oscar López Rivera is a name not known to many. To the American government he is a terrorist who was convicted and sentenced to 55 years in federal prison and again an additional 15 years in prison for conspiring to escape from the Leavenworth Prison.
To many others, this man, the world’s longest held political prisoner is a freedom fighter who fought for Puerto Rican independence. In this case, it’s indeed baffling as to where this man would fit in. freedom fighter or terrorist? More than 130 bombings that caused property damage, dozens of injuries and five deaths made the US government decide that this man, whatever is his intention is unfit to enjoy personal freedom.

Barack Obama commuting the sentence of 74-year-old Oscar Lopez Rivera on Jan 17, 2017 came under harsh criticism. A true democrat that he is, Obama had atoned for US’s past. To right the wrong! Puerto Rico was invaded not because it was a Spanish territory but also because America was interested in developing a sugar market there. The Mandela of Puerto Rico is a hero in the eyes of many as FALN (Fuerzas Armadas de LiberaciónNacional) members stormed the Carter-Mondale election headquarters in Chicago, and the George H.W. Bush campaign headquarters in New York, holding employees there hostage at gunpoint. Heard of hitting the nail on the head!

"History should be a witness that we are terrorists. Yes, we kill their innocents". Who else but a hopeless frustrated moron can utter this! Who else but a fanatic can classify terror as good and bad? The whole world knew this deranged coward could not even imagine getting close to white house or 10, Downing Street. Small dog, tall weeds! Venting out frustrations at the expense of lives does not further any cause.

When Obama the democrat pronounced, “Justice has been done” , “The North Star” of global terrorism was dead. Saddam Hussein’s rule, tyranny, invasions and fight against governments of neighbouring countries were put to an end too. Captured and killed, the remains of these weren’t saved for fanatics to make heroes or martyrs out of them.

Many a time gangsters escape death penalty with fines and a life sentence. Verdicts on the quantum of sentencing may or may not come decades after terror attacks and 3 or 4 months after guilt has been proved beyond doubt. Mumbai blasts are still fresh in our memories.

Unfortunately, many are acquitted for lack of ‘sufficient’ evidences. What did our country do with the terrorist organizations that attacked the political, so-called elites of India? There was no rallying even for the 14 people killed in the attack but for the convicts, that, it took more than a decade to tell the world that we don’t tolerate terror. An actor convicted of charges of illegal possession and destruction of an AK56 rifle that was part of the consignment of firearms and explosives to be used in the 1993 blasts was released a wee bit early and is stillbusy with ‘shoots’. Also, according to news reports, this actor seems to be all set to contest LokSabha Polls from Ghaziabad. Easy Peasy lemon squeezy! He isn’t an ‘everyman’ but son of a Late Former Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports in UPA government and brother of a Former MP.

Mounir el-Motassadeq Mounir el-Motassadeq, a terrorist convicted anywhere on charges related to 9/11 attacks is a free man again completing his 15-year-sentence on the condition that he agreed to be deportated to Morocco. This is unfair. Governments must tighten laws to prevent convicted terrorists from walking free at the end of their sentence.
March 21st being Australia’s Harmony Day which also coincides with the United Nations international day for the elimination of racial discrimination, what has an Australian done for the sake of harmony! The world also saw the right kind of reaction from a 17 yr old boy and Mr. Scott Morrison to Fraser Anning’s irresponsible and shameful response. The PM of New Zealand too did her best and is doing what she has to. Yet, lives lost are lost forever.

Terrorists aren’t worthy foes. But
