A brilliant film maker
Santosh Mehta
Rajkumar Hirani
Rajkumar Hirani is
once again in the
spotlight after his
‘Biopic’ on Sanju hit
the silver screen.
Sanju is an attempt at
understanding and educating
others on how a man can make it
to the top gracefully. It tries to
bring out the conviction needed to
succeed even after several lows in
life. It is this essence of life that
has been projected and not the
will to glamorize Sanjay Dutt, says
Hirani with a smile.
Hirani is very popular due to his
successful comedy and family
entertaining films like “Munna
Bhai”, “Lage Raho Munna Bhai,
“P.K”, ” 3 Idiots” and now Sanju.
Sanju a biopic on the real life of
famous actor Sanjay Dutt - son of
legendary film-actors late Sunil
Dutt and Nargis Dutt.
Sanjay was arrested for keeping
AK 47 rifle and was sentenced to
five years in prison. Hirani never
of thought of making a film on
Sanjay Dutt’s life just to glorify
him. But after listening to Sanjay
Dutt about the turmoils in his life, Hirani thought there was a story
that should be told. Hence the film
Sanju.
Hirani has deftly depicted
Sanjay Dutt’s few real-life
incidents of Jail. He has shown the
serious and unhealthy condition
inside the jail which Sanjay had to
suffer. He once visited him in Jail
and was shocked to see the
inhuman conditions , and was
quite upset the way, Sanjay had to
suffer without doing any crime.
Incidentally, he met Sanjay’s
wife Manyata Dutt. She also
explained the real-struggle about
Sanjay, She asked Hirani to make a
film or write a novel about his life.
Initially, Hirani was not
prepared for depicting Sanjay
Dutt’s life into a film. But it was
mere co-incidence that Sanjay
invited Hirani for a drink and he
explained his real-life time story.
Hirani spent 15 days just to listen
to his true inside story. He got
stuck up after Sanjay told him with
an open heart he never hid
anything. However, after getting
to know his real story, Hirani was
convinced that here is a man who is not hiding anything and this
story must be told to the
audience.
Aamir Khan in “PK”
That was the moment the idea
of making a biopic on Sanjay hit
Hirani’s intellectual mind as
Sanjay is not a ordinary guy but
belonged to famous film-actors
family. And the world knows about
his parents but people
misunderstand him due to the
media’s negative publicity.
After Hirani made Sanju biopic,
he is getting much attention due
to his brilliant direction and
selection of Ranbir Kapoor for
Sanjay Dutt’s role. Now, Sanju has
become blockbuster and the fifth
highest grossing Bollywood film.
Sanju continues to attract
audience even after the film
earned Rs 202.51 crore in the
opening week and is still hitting on
the screen.
Sanju, written and directed by
Raj Kumar Hirani, along with
Abhijat Joshi, starring Manisha
Koirala (Nargis Dutt), Dia Mirza(
Manayeta Dutt), Parel Rawal(Sunil
Dutt), Sonam Kapoor, Vicky
Kaushal, Jim Saurabh , Anuksha
Sharma acted as a famous storywriter.
Hirani is famous for making family and entertaining comedy
films. He grew up watching and
enjoying films made by noted
directors such as Hrishikesh
Mukherjee, Manmohan Desai and
Basu Chatterjee. This helped him
to achieve a high level of filmmaking.
He had a very professional
team, including producer Vidhu
Vinod Chopra, writer Abhijat Joshi,
actors like Boman Irani, composer
Shantanu Moitra and
cinematographer C.K.
Muralidharan to help him realize
his vision.
Raj Kumar Hirani, commonly
known as Raju Hirani, always
appreciates his co-stars and gives
them space for working
comfortably. He is a very calm
person who is not in a hurry just
to make commercial film. That’s
the reason he makes one film in
three years.
Hirani made his first film “3
Idiots” in 2009 and it crossed the
coveted Rs 200 crore mark in filmmaking.
He never compromised
the old film-making formula and
did not want to follow typical
rules.
His P.K. is a political satire
which became a hit due to
famous actor Aamir Khan playing
as an alien. The alien gets
stranded on earth with nothing
including clothes . Aamir Khan 's
locket was stolen and he
distributed the God's pamplets
inside the metro that was simple
act but it was funny,audience
loved it.
Actor Sanjay Dutt acted as
Bhairon Singh and took the alien
(Aamir Khan) to a night club. The
film became a hit due to the funny
acts performed by great actor
Aamir Khan.
Hirani’s imaginative and
simple, yet funny gestures
performed by Aamir Khan, made
the audience laugh, especially in
the scene inside the metro scene
or cash he has stolen.
Hirani recalls how a well-known film-director once met him on the
set and told him, “are you mad
and what’s wrong with you? ‘You
have taken Sanjay Dutt who’s
supposed to be an action hero in a
light comedy film. '
Hirani was quite disturbed by
the comment and then suddenly
he realized that he did not have to
follow that rule.
Hirani says, “ the idea is to
write for yourself. You really can’t
judge what audiences will like,
especially in India where the
literacy rates are so variable. You
just say, ‘This is something that
makes me cry and laugh, so let me
make this’
But as a film-director, he
considers himself fortunate that
his films have done well at the box
office. The success gives us
courage to make good films.
While Hirani made Sanjay Dutt’s
biopic, he selected title ‘Sanju’.
The reason behind his selection
was that Sanjay Dutt’s mother Late
Nargis Dutt used to call him Sanju,
Hirani thought this title is very
appropriate.
Hirani says that he did not have
the courage to show the film to
Sanjay. He was quite scared, but
Sanjay liked the film and even
cried after he saw it.
Hirani even told Sanjay that by
making a film on him, he is not
trying to glorify him so he decided
to select Ranbir Kapoor because
he knew Sanjay and his family.
Ranbir’s choice was amazing.
He is a brilliant actor along with
his family background. However,
both actors were from the
cinematic background and it
helped Hirani to choose Ranveer.
For Sunil Dutt’s role he has taken
Paresh Rawal who acted well.
Now 'Sanju' is getting hit at the
box-office. Actor Sanjay Dutt is
quite amazed Hirani has not
glorified his image. He has shown
only the few facts.
One cannot be glorified merely
because he is a famous star or
belongs to good family.
