Neerja Bhanot award

The 27th Neerja Bhanot Award was conferred on Sister Lucy Kurien of Pune on September 7, 2018 (also the birthday of Neeraja Bhanot) at the PHD Chamber, Chandigarh.
The award, which consisted of Rs. 1.50 lakh, a citation and a trophy, was given by Mr Akhil Bhanot, Managing Trustee, in the presence of Mr Aneesh Bhanot, General Secretary of the Neerja Bhanot Pan Am Trust, Air Marshal R.S. Bedi (Retd) amidst a distinguished gathering.
The award was instituted in the memory of Neerja Bhanot, the brave Senior Purser who died saving the lives of passengers on board Pan Am Flight 73 that was hijacked in September 1986 at Karachi Airport. Sister Lucy’s journey form being a helpless person to the recipient of this honour has been very tough.
Sister Lucy Kurein embodies the true spirit of Neerja of courage, commitment and compassion.
In her acceptance speech, Sister Lucy Kurien said, “I am proud to receive this award as it represents the spirit of Neerja Bhanot’s determination and grit in the face of overwhelming circumstances. A person must always face all adversities. Women must stand for their rights as well as the rights of other people, especially children.
Another highlight of the programme was a touching musical tribute paid by the “The Musical Eyes”, a group of blind students, who specially composed a song on Neerja. The book ‘The Smile of Courage’ written by her brother, Aneesh Bhanot, was released at a function.
