PUNJAB POLITICS

Time for Captain to act

K S Chawla

October 7 (Sunday) Witnessed a competitive politics of holding rallies and mudslinging against each other. There were three rallies. But the two rallies one by the Congress and the other by the Shiromini Akali Dal, were purely marred by mudslinging against each other. The third rally was organized by the panthic organizations with the participation of AAP rebels and the Lok Insaf Party of Bains brothers. The political rallies of the Congress and the Akali Dal were meant to demonstrate their political strength, for which there was no need at all. As a matter of fact, the Shiromini Akali Dal leadership of Parkash Singh Badal and his son Sukhbir Singh Badal has been badly exposed by the report of Justice Ranjit Singh Commission (retired) who probed into the incidents of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib at Burj Jawahar Singh Wala and police firing at Kotkapura and Bargari and Behbal Kalan.

The exposure of the Badals by the Justice Ranjit Singh has provided an opportunity to the Taksali Akalis to express their anger and resentment against the authoritarian rule of the Badal clan comprising Parkash Singh Badal, Sukhbir Singh Badal, Harsimrat Kaur Badal and Bikram Singh Majithia.

The Justice Ranjit Singh Commission has done a remarkable job by exposing the alleged connivance of the Badals with the dera premis of Baba Ram Rahim Singh of Sacha Sauda, Sirsa.

The exposure of the Badals by the Justice Ranjit Singh has provided an opportunity to the Taksali Akalis to express their anger and resentment against the authoritarian rule of the Badal clancomprising Parkash Singh Badal, Sukhbir Singh Badal, Harsimrat Kaur Badal and Bikram Singh Majithia.
As a matter of fact, ever since Sukhbir took over the reins of the party, the taksalis were targeted and they were forced to lie low. The voice of the taksalis was badly suppressed and they were sidelined. Sukhbir, Bikram Majithia and Harsimrat were the real voices in the Akali Dal.

The first casuality of these people was Manpreet Badal, a nephew of Parkash Singh Badal, who was assured by Badal to succeed him. But he was thrown out of the party. Then Captain Kanwaljit Singh, another popular leader of the party, was allegedly killed in an accident under mysterious circumstances. His death has remained a mystery so far.
The senior jathedars like Gurcharan Singh Tohra who served as President of the Akali Dal and SGPC were also sidelined and died unsung. Tohra was not allowed to die in Amritsar. He was flown to Delhi in the night time. He ‘died’ the next day afternoon.
After the death of Tohra and Talwandi, Badals had complete control over the Akali Dal and the SGPC and all dissenting voices were curbed. People like Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, Ranjit Singh Brahmpura, Dr. Rattan Singh Ajnala and Sewa Singh Sekhwan, who were loyalists of senior Badal, were dumped by the young jarnail… In 2014, when the NDA formed government under Narendra Modi, Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa should have been made the minister. But the Badals camped at Delhi and got a berth for Harsimrat Kaur. Dhindsa was denied his right.

The situation has changed and the Taksali Akali leaders are in no mood to follow the diktats of ‘Kakajis’. They are not ready to listen to senior Badal .

According to the latest report, Dhindsa got annoyed with Badal and has resigned from all posts of the party. The reason behind this resignation is stated to be that NDA government wanted to appoint Dhindsa as Governor of a state, but it is alleged that Badals opposed it and suggested the name of a former vice-chancellor of a University which the NDA rejected. This writer strongly feels that the situation has changed and the Taksali Akali leaders are in no mood to follow the diktats of ‘Kakajis’. They are not ready to listen to the senior Badal even as he also stands exposed badly.
The young jarnails have not learnt any lesson from the present crisis in the party and they do not desist from using unparliamentary language and showing disrespect to the people at large. During the past ten years, these young jarnails have tried to win over the youth by offering them various temptations like positions in the youth Akali Dal and Student Organisation of India (SOI). They have patronized rif-raf elements and not built party on any values-social or moral.

Punjab’s economy needs to be brought on track . It requires a lot of effort to create jobs for the youth who are emigrating and are becoming easy prey to the unscrupulous travel agents.

Similarly, the waves of resentment are rising in Majha too, once citadal of Akali Dal. Despite repeated appeals by Parkash Singh

Badal, Ranjit Singh Brahmpura, Dr. Rattan Singh Ajnala, Sewa Singh have refused to attend the Patiala rally of the Akali Dal. Ferozepur MP Ghabhaya has also refused to accept the leadership of Sukhbir Singh Badal. He has stated that he would not contest the election in 2019 under the leadership of Sukhbir. It may be mentioned here that it was Ghabhaya who resigned from Jalalabad Vidhan Sabha seat and offered the same to Sukhbir to contest and become Deputy Chief Minister. But later Ghabhaya was not treated well. Rather his business premises were got raided by the vigilance bureau of Punjab.
It is time for the Badals to have retrospection and seek forgiveness from the Akal Takhat before plunging into 2019 Lok Sabha elections. For their ‘sins’ of collaborating with the guilty of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib. There cannot be a bigger sin than committing sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib who is a living Guru of the Sikhs. They must also get rid of the jathedar of the Akal Takhat who was a part and parcel of all the sins committed during the ten years rule of the SAD-BJP Government in Punjab.
So far as the Congress government led by Captain Amarinder Singh is concerned, the Chief Minister needs to put all his force at his command for the ‘sewa’ of Punjabis. He should not become a party to any dirty politics in the state. He should take action in the matter of maintaining law and order in the state in order, which is in very bad shape. The Punjab cabinet should present a cohesive picture which is not at all seen at present.
