Originality missingM. R. Dua Perhaps first time in recent history, America's First Daughter of the sitting president Donald J. Trump, one of his three children from his first wife Ivana, a former Czech model, Mrs. Ivanka Trump Kushner, is enormously lucky. Ivanka has been bestowed with a position of privilege and priority in the Trump administration, her dad's adviser operates from her office in the western wing of the White House. She commands unprecedented power and influence in the nation's critical domestic, political and diplomatic affairs besides, she is a top businesswomen, and presiding over her own 'Ivanka fashion brands' manufacturing units in US, China, Indonesia and India. Meanwhile, recently, in September, when Ivanka Trump met India's external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj in the US during the UN general assembly session, she said, 'I have long respected India's accomplishments and its charismatic foreign minister Sushma Swaraj, and it was an honour to meet her in New York.' Later, Ivanka tweeted: 'We had a great discussion on women's entrepreneurship, the upcoming Global Entrepreneurship Summit 2017 (GES), and work force development in the US and India.' This summit is scheduled to be held in India's Hyderabad from November 27. Highly educated, with an MBA from Wharton business school, Ivanka Trump has also authored a couple of books. This book under review is the latest that came out in May this year. 'Women Who Work' unfolds some of her experiences from managing her own five-member family chores also administering her business enterprises. Feeling immensely empowered by success, she deigns to list business tactics and counsels that women can profit to 'best achieve personal satisfaction and professional success.' In preface to the book, Ivanka tells us she wrote this book before her father Donald Trump became president. She also tells us what qualifies her to write this volume: 'Inspiring and empowering women who work – at all stages of their lives—has been my mission throughout my entire career'… and adds 'have the opportunity to take that work to new heights and advocate for change on a far greater scale.' She dwells in introduction how women should 'rewrite the rules for success' despite 'working with family' and I 'want my daughter's generation to think about differently.' Incidentally, Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner, have three children— Arabella, Joseph and Theodore—all below eight years. Ivanka has been bestowed with a position of privilege and priority in the Trump administration, her dad's adviser and operates from her office in the western wing of the White House. She commands unprecedented power and influence in the nation's critical domestic, political and diplomatic affairs, besides being a top businesswomen, and presiding over her own 'Ivanka fashion brands' manufacturing units in US, China, Indonesia and India. Ivanka Trump Listing several formulae to establish oneself as successful professional, Ivanka exhorts women to define success on your own terms; achieve it by your own rules; and, build a life you're proud to live. In all the six chapters, she keeps rolling out her counsels and suggestions—have passion for life's big dreams; think 'to acquire skill to make a mark'; maximize influence at work; work smarter, not harder; seize meaningful moments; and finally, lead with purpose around women and work. The book abounds with quotations and statements of inspirational leader, CEOs from the Trump Organization and other captains of industry, intellectual giants and authors. As one media comment on this book noted recently… the book is 'a strawberry milkshake of inspirational quotes.' An avid and discriminating reader will find the sources of almost all these meticulously and methodically authenticated in elaborate end-notes; but Recently, in September, when Ivanka Trump met India's external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj in the US during the UN general assembly session, she said, 'I have long respected India's accomplishments and its charismatic foreign minister Sushma Swaraj, and it was an honour to meet her in New York.' outstanding among these have
been conspicuously
highlighted with beige colour
background, point by point.
However, the paradox is that
when all these are put together
and linked intelligently,
Ivanka's own contribution
pales into inanity; sans
originality or any meaningful
details of professional feats or
exploits. The text also gives
abundant, unmissable
impressions that generous
individuals and agencies have
contributed in the book's 'preparation and
development.'
In addition, there're
umpteen, unbridled do's and
don't's, sweetly-worded
dictates and instructions,
advice, hints, clues -- how-to,
not-to, what-to, non-specific,
vague, guidance tit-bits spread
all over 240 odd pages.
The book could indeed have
been a better and a convincing
companion of working women,
and served an excellent help
for 'women who work', or
those who want to do work,
and be model for
entrepreneurs, CEOs and bigleague
administrators only if
its contents looked genuine
and from real life experiences. |
