ENGINEERING

Transforming modern life

Shobha Aggarwal

The Uncanny sharp minds which are doing wonders in the field of engineering are giving so much to the society by coming up with avant-garde ideas that transform modern living.
Various engineering branches revolutionised the society, from dwelling in multistory buildings, enjoying cold time in hot summers, seeing someone in front of your eyes who is miles away, launching satellite, and reaching on mars. Technology has enormous potential in simplifying life, solving problems, guiding and upgrading generations to follow.
Stability and predictability of engineering is the reason for it to be the top career choice.
It is one such sector where growth is perpetual, and the upcoming decade has even brighter prospects. This is no longer the men's territory. Women too are meticulously and successfully carving their niche.
It is about using scientific principles to design and build. A career in engineering can fetch one a dream job in terms of application of innovative ideas and financial gains too. If research and development attracts you, this is meant for you. The success also depends on students own potential in the chosen field and reputation of the institution too. Engineering has four core branches to choose Mechanical, Electrical, Civil and Chemical, and sub-branches of each of the discipline. Popularity and ranking of the branch is driven by demand and supply situation and is dynamic. Each discipline has a wide scope due to its numerous specialties.
Mechanical engineering involves designing, manufacturing, developing and inspection of machinery. They are required in designing prosthetic devices and artificial organs. In chemical engineering one designs processes to transport, transform and produce materials. Careers in it include alternative energy sources, food production, industrial chemical, petroleum and more.
Civil engineering is all about designing, construction and maintenance of physical structure like roads, bridges, buildings, dams airport etc and taking note of wiring, lighting installation in equipment's auto mobiles buildings and aircrafts. Further each of the core branches may combine to form newer subtypes.
One can choose any one of the following- Aerospace, engineering, structural engineering, Biomedical engineering, computer engineering, industrial engineering, environmental engineering, mining and geological engineering, petroleum engineering. Scope of engineering - It has wide scope, from government jobs to private jobs one can work in various central government departments like Railways, Central Public works department (CPWD), water commission, power sector ordinance, Defence. They can enter these sectors through "Indian Engineering Services' exam. In private sector too the growth is enormous. One can even explore foreign land where an engineering

degree, can be lucrative. The number one choice is U.S for those sagacious minds; followed by Canada, New Zealand, Switzerland Germany, England, Japan etc.
Engineering Entrance:- JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) JEE (advance), AIEEF, BITSAT, VITEE, COMED-K, AMU, NDE entrance and various state level exams for (Graduate aptitude test in Engineering) for graduate courses one should are 50-60% marks depending on the institute one's seeking admission in.
The wide array of engineering professions broadens the horizons for innovation research and development. Bill Nye has said - "There is nothing I believe more strongly than getting young people interested in science and engineering, for better tomorrow, for all humankind".
