Trump under scanner

M. R. Dua

Joy-Ann Reid The book under review is an attempt to answer two questions: One, how did U.S. President Donald Trump ‘sold millions of Americans, and the world, on a raft of lies, that were at once frivolous and dangerous; and, second, how can the United States now ‘undo the damage he has done?
The author writes Gotham City, where Donald grew up, is a New York City’s outlying town, ‘filled with over-the-top villains... their ostentatious wealth, and their ability to wreak havoc on the urban landscape.’ It was also a place from where the young Donald inculcated his unending craze for wealth, his inordinate love for fame and his now notorious, inundating ego of being a ‘Trump.
During the past 36 months, Donald Trump’s White House has perennially and unhesitatingly indulged in uncounted grave political, diplomatic and administrative bungling that have brought him to face legislative’s judiciary committee inquiry that may ultimately lead to his impeachment by early 2020.
The author has been an impassioned presenter of her Sunday signature programme on MSNBC television network, AMJOY, where she reviews and knowledgably critiques America’s involvement in global economic, political, diplomatic and many burning international conundrums.
Joy-Reid has intimate knowledge of partisan pressures, wide entangling, vicious conspiracies and ‘misdeeds’ of the Trump White House.
The author lists Trump’s uncounted surreptitious manipulative ‘aggressive, full throttle voter suppression deployed in various states that brought his unexpected White House victory in 2016.
Reid bares ‘some of the most open appeals to racial fear the country has seen in the modern political era,’ how he asked the four Congresswomen of colour to ‘go back to their country’ if they were not happy in the US.
The author narrates how Trump has ‘normalized corruption, cronyism, kleptocracy, and the public display of thuggery and open racism.
How to undo what harm Trump has done? The author suggests it can be done through the 2020’s ballot box. She warns Trump: “You’re just a horrible, irredeemable human being, and we’ll show you how ‘horrible we voters can be.’
