Getting Ready Into Election Mode

Though the assembly elections in Haryana are scheduled to be held only in February 2010, there is good reason for the state Chief Minister Bhupender Singh Hooda and Congress High Command Sonia Gandhi to advance the polls so that it can encash the unprecedented goodwill generated in the recent Lok Sabha polls, analyzes V P PRABHAKAR

With all indications that Haryana may go for assembly elections in October along with Maharashtra and Arunachal Pradesh, the Congress and Chief Minister Bhupender Singh Hooda are getting ready into election mode. Though the assembly elections in Haryana are scheduled to be held in Feburary 2010, the Congress high Command seems inclined to go with the Hooda line to reap the benefit of the impressive show of the Congress in Haryana as it has won 9 of the 10 Lok Sabha seats. In fact, creditably for Hooda, the Congress has repeated its 2004 feat, when it had captured 9 seats.

The only difference this time is that Haryana Jathit Congress has won the Hissar seat whereas in the 2004 elections, the Sonepat seat had gone to BJP. Notably, this time the alliance of Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) led by O P Chautala and BJP failed to get any seat.

The Congress held its first meeting of the party workers on June 6, though it was given out that the conclave was called to extend "thanks" to the party workers for their excellent work in generating people's support in the Lok Sabha elections.

In the meeting, Chief Minister Hooda and state Congress president Phool Chand Mullana exhorted them to get ready for the next battle of ballot. Of course, they did not say that these would be held in October.

The Chief Minister also announced that Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi would be invited to address a rally in Haryana soon. He said that the massive mandate given to the Congress by the people was in fact an endorsement of the policies of the Congress and Haryana government. This mandate had obviously put more responsibility on his shoulders.

Meanwhile, preparing ground for wooing the electorate, Rohtak M.P. and son of the Chief Minister Deepender Singh Hooda urged the Chief Minister to raise the monthly old age allowance to a uniform level of Rs 700 per month for all beneficiaries. At present, it is being given at the rate of Rs 500 and Rs 700 per month for two categories of beneficiaries.

In the coming days, over one lakh power connections to the people living below poverty line would be released for domestic use under the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen VidyutiKaran Yojna. They would not be charged any fee for giving the connections.

In order to attract farmers, Chief Minister Hooda also plans to launch A p n a Transformer Scheme taking 11000 KV electricity line and installment of separate transformer for each tube well.
