Meaning Of Life
All powerful people in control of the destiny of millions, surround themselves with seemingly impenetrable forms of security. Yet the new ultimate destiny can be controlled by a mere virus, writes KAILASH VAJPEYI dwelling on the endless cycle of birth and death

"The world repeats itself precisely, endlessly. For the most part people do not know they will live their lives over. Traders do not know that they will make the same bargain again and again. Politicians do not know that they will shout from the same lectern an infinite number of times in the cycles of time. Parents treasure the first laugh from their child as if they will not hear it again. Lovers making love the first time they undress shyly, show surprise at the supple thigh, the fragile nipple. How would they know that each secret glimpse, each touch will be repeated again and again and again exactly as before." (Einstein's Dreams)

The above passage reminds one of the story of the intellectual son of the creator, who instructed him to go and create the world. Sthanu like all other intellectuals, thought about the drudgery and the futility of the cycle of life and death. The process of making love for the sake of procreation looked so absurd to Sthanu that, instead of following the instructions of Brahman he retreated into the caverns of the sea.

In order to explain the perfectivity of repetitiveness of the entire phenomena one will have to understand the concept of Maya, mentioned in ancient scriptures of India. Maya or illusion rises from ignorance says the Yogavasishtha, the source of empirical knowledge. The emergence of ignorance is subtle. From no notion you hit a vague notion, which is diffused in the beginning.

Slowly you realise that in the process of meditating on and on you have reached from a vague notion to a clear and full notion, which with the passage of time leads to confusion. Ultimately confusion is submerged in the ocean of bleak ignorance. Knowledge therefore is the theatre of stupidity directed by Maya. What is true of knowledge is also true of any human activity. One may select any area, conditions and circumstances, the trap of Maya is going to catch you. Maya is a psychic conditioning. Nothing occurs in one's life, which is not germinated in the mind. You get up every morning taking it for granted that the sun would be there. You start with a newly created blue print and run to achieve it. All powerful people in control of the destiny of millions, surround themselves with seemingly impenetrable forms of security. Yet the new ultimate destiny can be controlled by a mere virus.

Significantly, Bhartrihari, the 6th century poet-king, thought and dreamt as Einstein in our times. The 8th century AD philosopher Shankara sang of the futility and the repetitive process of life, perhaps inspired by Bhartrihari's Vairagya Shatak. Shankara carried Bhartrihari's thought forward to focus on the repetitious cycles of birth and death. He says: 'Punarapi Jananam - Punarapi Maranam/ Punarapi Janani Jathre Shayanam./ Ih Samsare Khaludustare - Kripya pare Pahi Murare'. While Shankara is describing the monotony involved in being born again and again which of course is a senseless activity, do we really have control over the cycle of being and becoming or disappearing for ever?

Lord Mahavir's Kaivalya and Buddha s Nirvan were a kind of effort to get free from this boredom that is all pervasive. But for the common man these very repetitive moments described in the very beginning are the hypnotic glimpses of creativity. How so ever futile they may seem to be, they should also be termed as a sort of metaphorical permutation of phenomenological order. Today, most of the positive thinkers see life as mystical process under which the unending game of germination and termination will go on till infinity. There is no question of ultimate achievement or failure. Man is inescapably a survivor. The most interesting form of achievement of success is to remain alive. Success, howsoever transitory and hollow it may sound though, is always a success. Like the road to happiness is always under construction, success is also never final.
